Saint-Petersburg

Saint-Petersburg is the second largest city of Russia after Moscow. It’s also known as “Northern capital” or “Northern Venice”. It was founded by Peter the Great more than 300 years ago and the beauty of the Romanovs’ golden age is reflected in its superb architecture, exquisite ensembles of rivers and bridges and exceptional atmosphere.

Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin city, UNESCO's World Heritage List)

Catherine’s palace is the gem of the world famous State Museum – Preserve “Tsarskoye Selo”, summer residence of the Romanovs built in 18th century (baroque style).

Palace Large hall for balls and appointments as well as the Amber room call particular attention to its decorations.

The Amber room was reconstructed by the Russian restorers in 2003 instead the other stolen by German invaders during the Second World War.

Beautiful park is surrounded the palace. The Russians as foreign tourists like to walk here admiring statures, ponds and the scenery.

Petrodvorez (Peterhof)

Peterhof located on Gulf of Finland side 30 kilometers away to southwest from Saint-Petersburg. The Grand Palace of Peterhof was the summer residence of the Romanovs. Lots of dishes and ware collections, furniture, paintings other exhibits from the Romanovs age are in the palace.

“Lower park” (more than 100 hectare) is surrounded the Grande Palace where you can see about 150 fountains including world famous “Samson”. One of the reasons it was founded by Peter the Great was proximity to Baltic Sea as well as area with natural ponds and welled out springs. Possibility was provided by the Russian engineers constructed sluices and canals here to hold water in “High park” pools for rushing it after to “Lower park” fountains.

“Lower park” is known too as a place of many amusement fountains admired by children.

Konstantin’s palace (Strelna village)

Konstantin’s palace is situated on Gulf of Finland side 19 kilometers away from Saint-Petersburg.

In the first half on 18th century Peter the Great had the intention to raise summer palace and “Russian Versailles” here but presently Peter the Great changed his mind to make it in Peterhof as much more favorable fountain place. Palace was constructed later and named after prince Konstantin, Catherine the Second’s grandchild. It was prince residence until 1917.

Palace was destroyed into ruins during Second World War. In 2003 (Saint-Petersburg 300 years anniversary) it was raised from the ruins in record time by the order of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir V. Putin.

Currently palace named as “Congress palace”. It is here in 2006 G8 summit was held.

In 2007 splendid collection of 450 paintings and tableware have been exhibited in palace. It is Mstislav L. Rostropovich, world famous cellist, and his wife Galina P. Vishnevskaya, opera star, who was the owners of the collection. After Rostropovich’s death it was bought at “Sothebi’s” auction by Alisher Usmanov, Russian businessman, and donated to the Russian Federation.

Kronstadt

“Kronstadt” means “City-crown” in German.

Kronstadt is located on Kotlin island 32 kilometers away to northwest from Saint-Petersburg. In 1704 by Peter the Great there was raised new fortress to defend new capital of Russia – Saint-Petersburg.

Kronstadt is main naval base of Baltic navy from 1720. That is the reason why the city was closed for foreigners as far as few years ago. At the moment it is opened and tourist can visit the city with no restrictions.

At present Kronstadt as island city connected with Saint-Petersburg by highway that is on dike specially constructed to protect Saint-Petersburg from flood.

Moreover it is in Kronstadt where famous “Kronstadt revolt” took place and interesting page in Russian and Soviet history was created. You can see by your own eyes the place where garrison and some ships crew of Baltic navy were gone into action against Soviet rule.

Kronstadt is famous too for its beautiful orthodox temples: Naval cathedral of St. Nicholas and cathedral of the Vladimir icon of the Mother of God.

Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation. In 2010 according to statistical information of U.N.O. Moscow ranked first place in Europe and 19th place in the world subject to its 10,5 million population.
